To animal activists, animals born and bred for slaughter and human consumption are known as ‘farmed animals’. Most of them (cows, pigs, sheep, goats, ducks, and chickens) have never been shown kindness, bonded with their mothers, or wandered freely outside of their concrete enclosures. Sanctuaries offer refuge to farmed animals who have been rescued.
