In the world of animal activism, many of us refer to animals who are born and bred for the slaughterhouse and human consumption as ‘farmed animals’. Most of these animals (cows, pigs, sheep, goats, ducks, and chickens) have never been shown kindness, bonded with their mothers or wandered freely outside of their concrete enclosures.

Industries such as biomedical research, fashion, entertainment, meat and dairy exploit and disregard the intelligent and rich emotional life of these sentient beings. Sanctuaries offer refuge to farmed animals who have been rescued or have fortunately escaped slaughter.

* In the making of this series we tried our best to match the correct names to these animal portraits.
